The body is a doorway to the soul. In a culture where we spend an enormous amount of time in our thinking, rational minds, we tend to feel disconnected from our bodies, hearts and souls. Embodied practice allows us to explore ourselves and our connection to the soul not only with just our minds, but in ways that include the body, heart and soul. With these practices, we stay connected to what is happening in our bodies, through breath, attention and sensation. Some of these practices include creative expression (art, ritual, dance, writing and music); heart centered meditation (connecting to the body and energy present within); and embodiment practice (allowing the natural intelligence of our bodies to come forth through movement and sound.) Through these practices, we are invited into the landscape of wholeness; to the place of reclaiming all of who we are. When we move out of our heads and into our bodies, we turn up the volume on our hearts and allow the Ego and the thinking mind, to take its appropriate place as a partner in our emotional and spiritual growth. When we include the body and sensation in our healing, we begin to hear, and trust, a different voice. One that is creative and invites us to embrace the whole of our humanity and the beautiful truth of who we are.
Soma offers workshops and on-going classes at different times throughout the year. Jenny also works with people individually, using both a verbal process of self inquiry, as well as embodied practice. She has developed curriculum for a variety of people and settings; including a class for a year-long women's circle; a workshop for children and for children and their parents; a class series for those living with cancer and a workshop for committed adult partners. She developed a year-long curriculum for elementary school children that builds relationship with self and community, using creative expression and the life skills, adapted from the Integrated Thematic Instruction curriculum. She has also developed a curriculum for a year-long program, that focuses on returning to our spiritual strength within, through embodied practice. She offers classes for people who are struggling with, and challenged by, their physical bodies, and tailors her classes to meet these needs. Jenny is excited to be bringing this work outside of Colorado Springs this year to , Yarmouth, Nova Scotia; Asheville, North Carolina; San Francisco and she has a beautiful opportunity this winter, to travel around the world with Semester at Sea, where she will offer spiritual development on the ship to college students, faculty and staff.
About Soma
What does Soma mean?
Soma is the Latin word for body.
What does "where body meets soul" mean?
Soma creates space for you to reflect on your relationship with many different parts of yourself, including your physical body and your spiritual and emotional life. We do this through practices rooted in the body, the heart and the soul.
What does embodied practice mean?
Embodied practice means including our bodies, hearts and souls, in addition to our intellects, in the practices we use to better know ourselves. Soma uses the following creative mediums for self reflection. Any of these practices could be present in a workshop: movement, dance, meditation, embodiment practice, working with breath, art process (i.e. clay, mask making, prayer bead making, painting, mandala work), writing, recitation of poetry, guided imagery, theater, processes of self and group inquiry, and ritual.
Why do this type of work, how is it different from other types of self reflective processes?
The space Soma offers allows you to explore yourself in ways that involve body, soul and heart, in addition to the thinking mind. So much creative and loving assistance is available to us, when we open to our hearts and go beyond our thinking minds. Soma offers space to explore these parts of ourselves that, especially in our culture, can remain hidden.
Who are these workshops for?
Soma offers workshops and classes for women, men and women, children, couples, and a parent/child class. Also, Jenny has taught in the public schools, preschools, hospitals, churches and within the nonprofit world. Please visit the Workshop page on this website to view current offerings. Those of us who do not inhabit our flesh, who do not have the deep satisfaction that our bodies can give, are always banging at the door of ourselves. ~ Stanley Keleman
